Aubrey Plaza hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend for the first time and for the first episode of 2023. If you know me then you know I adore Aubrey and was very excited to see what she would bring to her hosting gig.
Plaza has received much critical acclaim in her most recent work for The White Lotus season 2, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and “Emily the Criminal,” which landed a spot on Barack Obama’s top 2022 films, but her role as April Ludgate in the beloved sitcom Parks and Recreation might be her most famed character to date. I was low-key hoping for a Parks and Rec reunion with Aubrey Plaza hosting, but what I got was so much better.
During Weekend Update with Colin Jost and Michael Che, Colin introduced a guest that was supposed to encourage young people to get involved in local government, but instead, we got Aubrey dressed as April Ludgate. If you know Aubrey’s character from Parks and Rec then you know she is not the proper person to encourage anyone to do anything. Insert Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, the bubbly deputy director of the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana who loves government almost as much as she loves Joe Biden. The bit was the perfect way to give Parks and Rec fans a reunion.
Watch April Ludgate and Leslie Knope talk about working for local government on SNL’s Weekend Update in the clip below. Share your thoughts in the comments.
