It’s been a little over a week since “M3GAN” premiered in theaters as the first horror feature film in 2023 and the M3GAN takeover is real! With a budget of $12 million, “M3GAN” surpassed expectations grossing up to $93 million worldwide since its release and a sequel for the film is reported to already be in the works.
Directed by Gerard Johnstone and screenplay by Akela Cooper, “M3GAN” follows robotics engineer Gemma (Allison Williams) becoming the primary caregiver of her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) when her parents die in a car accident. Cady feels completely isolated and is having a hard time adjusting to her new circumstances until Gemma introduces her to a life-like robotic doll named M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis), Model 3 Generative Android, whose goal is to protect someone from emotional and physical harm when paired together. Then all hell breaks loose when M3GAN’s loyalty goes beyond what she was programmed for.
M3GAN is a worthy addition to killer dolls in the horror genre, but I wanted more from her. More kills, more gore, more screen time, just more. There is rumored to be a more violent cut of the film and I would love to see that. I think the potential for M3GAN to really make a mark in the horror world is there, but she needs to step it up. Being a killer doll M3GAN was naturally compared to the most famous one around, Chucky, but she definitely stands out on her own.
M3GAN Vs. Chucky: Which Killer Doll is Really the Best?
If you thought the dancing was something wait until you hear her sing! M3GAN is manipulative and condescending and that’s what makes her a great killer. All M3GAN had to do was give a look in silence and the audience could tell who her next victim was. I’m not sure why people keep messing around with artificial intelligence. We’ve seen it with V.I.K.I from “I, Robot” in 2004, the program in the 2008 film “Eagle Eye,” and Ultron from “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015. It never goes as intended. Technology is only getting more advanced and that means M3GAN could too and I’ll be along for the ride.
“M3GAN” is playing now in theaters.
