They had me at Georgina Sparks!

HBO Max’s reboot of the 2008 CW series Gossip Girl is returning for its second season at the top of December. Season 1 ironically wrapped in December 2021 with the Constance St. Jude’s crew heading to upstate New York for a big New Year’s bash. Julien (Jordan Alexander) made alliances with Gossip Girl, unknowingly run by Kate Keller (Tavi Gevinson) and some of the other teachers, while still dealing with the fallout of her dad’s (Luke Kirby) Me Too controversy. Zoya (Whitney Peak) embraced her new identity outside of her sister’s friend group with Shan (Grace Duah). Max (Thomas Doherty), Audrey (Emily Alyn Lind), and Aki (Evan Mock) agreed to an exclusive polyamorous relationship which I LOVE. Lastly, Monet (Savannah Lee Smith) decided she would be the new It girl of Constance and will team up with Luna (Zión Moreno) for the takedown.

Showrunner and executive producer Josh Safran told Teen Vogue that the new season will have time to expand the stories of the characters we met in the first and it won’t be broken down into two parts. “I always knew that if we got to a season two, the characters themselves, now that they have been manipulated by Gossip Girl for a full season, would start to play into Gossip Girl’s hand,” Safran said adding, “That would be the place for us to go back to doing that stuff that the first show did so well because we would’ve, A) established ourselves as our own entity, but, B) if you’re a group of teenagers and Gossip Girl is screwing with you, it took a while for Blair and Serena even to fall into… they weren’t pushing each other into the Seine or into fountains early. That was because Gossip Girl’s influence gets to you so much that it amps you up, and that’s season two … There are catfights, and people get pushed into a fountain.” Yay!

The best news from this announcement of season 2 is that Michelle Trachtenberg is back as Georgina Sparks. Georgina was the rambunctious friend from Serena van der Woodsen’s (Blake Lively) past and made her first appearance in the OG Gossip Girl in 2008 in season 1, episode 15. She had a recurring role and appeared throughout all 6 seasons of the series. In season 1 of the HBO Max Gossip Girl, Georgina had a tie in with her son Milo Sparks (Azhy Robertson) appearing in episode 4, now mama is coming to play.

Back in June, the Gossip Girl Instagram account teased the return of my girl Georgie with a reel that had a blurred video of a woman in the balcony clapping that read “It only takes one spark to start a fire.” And I only know one Sparks who would fit that description.

“What she brought to the original series was anarchy,” Safran said about Trachtenberg’s return. “She’s an anarchist. She’ll just do anything and just for any reason she decides. So we brought that energy to the first show, and then we brought that energy back to this one. She’s the same, and that’s what I think is so fun, that Michelle is older, we’re all older, Georgina is older yet has the exact same energy. She’s out of time. Michelle inhabits that role so fully and so thoughtfully and just knows what she’s there to do, knows how she fits into this universe.” I hope more OG’s show up in season 2.
