“Did you know that the very first assembly of photographs to create a motion picture was a two-second clip of a black man on a horse?”

Jordan Peele dropped the official trailer for his highly anticipated third film “Nope.” Keke Palmer opens the trailer with the quote mentioned above as her character is shooting what appears to be a promo video with Daniel Kaluuya’s character in the background. The pair are workers for Haywood Ranch, the only black-owned horse trainers in Hollywood.

The official plot for the film reads “the residents in a lonely gulch of inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.” The trailer alludes to aliens, but it can’t be that simple. Not in a Jordan Peele film. Commentary online also pointed out the use of horses. In past Peele films animals have held a key factor in the plot, what could the horses mean in “Nope?” I’m not going to go deep into any theorizing just from a trailer. I want to see the film first and then I’ll be able to unpack.

Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, and Barbie Ferreira also appear in “Nope” in theaters on July 22, 2022.
