We are in the home stretch to Christmas and that means there are only a few more blog posts I have that will suggest some holiday content to get you in the spirit of the season. You can watch these shows or films by yourself or with your family. Speaking of family, the Christmas season has been programmed as a time for you to spend with your loved ones, but for one couple it’s a time to do the opposite.
Brad and Kate (Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon) have spent recent Christmases doing all the things they truly enjoy leading up to a tropical vacation they take over the holiday in “Four Christmases.” What excuse do they tell their parents about not coming home? It varies from year to year, but this time in particular their flight gets canceled and they are caught on the local news to discuss what they will do next. When Brad and Kate’s family catches wind of this they are now obligated to split their time between both parents’ homes (all divorced so it’s four Christmases hence the title).
Brad’s dad Howard (Robert Duvall) and his brothers Denver (Jon Favreau) and Dallas (Tim McGraw) have pent-up resentment. Kate’s mom Marilyn (Mary Steenburgen) is dating Pastor Phil (Dwight Yoakam) from their church and her sister Courtney (Kristin Chenoweth) is convinced Kate doesn’t want kids. Brad’s mom Paula (Sissy Spacek) is married to Brad’s former best friend -awkward! And the night ends rather peacefully at Kate’s dad’s (Jon Voight) house.
Throughout the movie, the flaws in Brad and Kate’s relationship come to light as they discover elements about each other that weren’t evident. I love “Four Christmases” not only for the comedic element but it shows that we’re all screwed up in one way or another because of our family and we can either work through it or allow it to destroy us. In the end, it always turns out just fine. Where to watch: AMC+, HBO Max
