“Some Christmas movies are sweet. Some are funny. Others are just super, super weird, but only one of them is all of those things,” is the way Screen Junkies opens their Honest Trailers for “Elf” and that perfectly sums it up.

The 2003 film stars Will Ferrell as Buddy, an orphan who stows himself in Santa’s sack one Christmas Eve at his orphanage. Back at the North Pole, Santa discovers the surprise, but instead of returning Buddy he is raised by Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) and the other elves until he’s fully grown. One holiday, Buddy decides he wants to find his birth dad Walter (James Caan) and travels to New York City to be reunited with him. Being raised on the North Pole left Buddy with a certain mindset that doesn’t pair well with the people he encounters in New York, at first, but in true holiday spirit, everyone slowly becomes a believer.

A Christmas movie in New York will always be on my watch list, but “Elf” has so many quotable moments it will remain a holiday classic until the end of time.  Where to watch: HBO Max, Starz
