GGB’s 25 Days of Christmas Watch List: Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

Christmas has always been creepy if you really think about it. The idea of the big man in red watching you and knowing when you’ve been naughty or nice and also comes into your house while you’re sleeping is creepy! It only makes sense that an entire genre of horror would be dedicated to the holiday. If you’re an avid GGB reader then you know horror is my go-to genre and with Christmas being my second favorite holiday, Christmas horror is a win-win for me and I have plenty of recommendations in that field.

I first saw “Silent Night, Deadly Night” (1984) years ago. It randomly came on cable and I would watch it whenever I saw it on, but since then I have never seen it play again on TV. This is such an ’80’s horror movie and if you are a horror lover like me then you know what I mean. Bobby’s (Robert Brian Wilson) parents were murdered by a deranged man dressed as Santa when he was a child, so he grew up having serious traumatic breaks around Christmas and anything to do with Santa. This turns him into a crazed Santa-dressed killer himself in his adult life.

It’s a deep cut ’80’s gem, but one of the main reasons I love this movie is for a single sequence that introduced me to one of my favorite non-mainstream Christmas songs. “Warm Side of the Door” by Morgan Ames is so catchy and in context, I find it so funny. It makes me love this movie so much and I’m not sure why, but I do and maybe you will as well. Where to watch: Amazon Prime $1.99 (rent) YouTube $1.99 (rent)
