Quick Movie Review: Traveling Abroad For Adventure Goes Wrong In ‘No Escape’

Do you want a cautionary tale of needing friends who know how to read the room? Then you should watch “No Escape” on Hulu. Originally titled “Follow Me,” the film is about a social media personality named Cole (Keegan Allen) who runs a very successful vlog called #ERL (Escape Real Life). To celebrate 10 years of vlogging, Cole and his friends (Denzel Whitaker, Holland Roden, George Janko, and Siya) travel to Moscow in an all expense trip paid by Alexei (Ronen Rubinstein) who promises them an unforgettable experience in an escape catered just for them. Ut oh.

One thing about me, I LOVE an escape room experience, so I’m going to watch a movie centering an escape room. I get highly competitive when it comes to playing games and when I’m immersed in an escape room I really become a different person. That was one of the reasons I clicked on this movie because of the theme it was based on and I stayed to figure out if this all was really happening.

It starts off slow to establish the characters and the type of person Cole, the lead, is. You don’t get a sense that something is off until the characters get to the escape room. The location is already suspect so I would have turned around right then and there. Any place that requires you to turn in your cell phone is NOT a place I want to be at. Clearly they don’t want you calling for help.

The elements of the escape room are giving “Saw” vibes that the characters think is part of the game until they don’t! Soon it’s clear that this fun adventure has turned into something else and I must admit I was feeling a bit anxious. What do you do when you’re in a foreign country, you don’t speak the language, and find yourself in deep trouble? This ending was sort of predictable and if you seen the 1997 film “The Game” I feel like “No Escape” is a modern take on that. “Decide what is real.”

Watch the trailer for “No Escape” in the clip below. Are you going to check this movie out? Do you want me to spoil the ending? Share your thoughts in the comments.
