Driving across country by yourself should be acceptable for a woman to do, but when it comes down to it it’s never a good idea. Case in point a movie I watched on Hulu the other day; “Alone.”
Directed by John Hyams and written by Mattias Olsson, “Alone” opens with a woman packing up a Uhaul to move to an unknown destination. We later come to find out her name is Jessica (Jules Willcox) and she’s widowed. The film is broken down into three parts (The Road, The River, and The Rain) with the first bit of action coming from Jessica trying to get around a slow driver on a two lane road. It’s what any would want to do if you’re behind someone driving way too slow, but then the person speeds up not letting you past. This was the initial sense of danger.
The creep (Marc Menchaca) “some how” finds Jessica to apologize for his behavior on the road and eventually she gets run off the road due to him following her and she gets taken. She wakes at a remote cabin and that’s when the real cat and mouse game begins. I won’t tell you how it ends, unless you want me to.
I was entertained while watching this but there were a few issues. The fact that Jessica was a widow served no point in the story. I guess it was so that we the audience knew how vulnerable she was. With an estranged relationship with her parents, especially her mom, and not having anyone else; she was a perfect target, but focusing on the widow aspect didn’t move the story in any way. Also with the creep, what was his whole thing. I know you can only show so much in a film under two hours, but I would have wanted a little inside into his motives. I do like characters I can root for in movies like these however. Outside of a few mistakes, Jessica did what needed to be done throughout. Yes girl, yes!
“Alone” is available now on Hulu. Check out the trailer for the film in the clip below. Does this look like a film you want to watch? Have you seen it already? Let’s chat in the comments.
