When I start to really like an actor or actress I dig into their filmography to watch everything they ever did. Last year I unintentionally became a Marvel fan when I watched “Guardians of the Galaxy” because of my Chris Pratt obsession (Due to Parks and Recreation). That led me to watch all the films in the MCU finally getting the hype. I’m no comic book nerd and don’t know all the ins and outs of the Marvel Universe, but I like what’s on the surface.
Since I’m a Marvel fan now I was excited to see the first Marvel Disney+ series WandaVision that would follow Avenger members Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlett Witch played by Elizabeth Olsen and Vision played by Paul Bettany. It’s so good and I’m sort of obsessed with Elizabeth Olsen, so that led me to finding which movies of hers I could see on streaming services. Long story short, too late, let’s get into “Wind River.”
Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, “Wind River” is inspired by actual events and is set in the deeply cold mountains of Wyoming spreading a number of Native American reservations. Elizabeth Olsen stars as Jane Banner, a FBI agent sent to the small town of Lander to investigate a found body in the neck of the woods.
The film opens with a poem being spoken in voiceover as we see a girl desperately running through a snowy pasture towards the woods in the dead of night. What happened to this girl? It then establishes Jeremy Renner’s character, Cory Lambert, as a very skilled hunter with a troubled past. (Ex-wife, a son trying to build a relationship with him, and a deceased daughter). This ain’t the Scarlett Witch and Hawkeye you know, but you’ll love them anyway.
Cory stumbles onto a dead body while hunting and realizes it’s his dead daughter’s friend Natalie (Kelsey Asbille) who is also the daughter of a close family friend. Jane comes to town to solve what is clearly a death caused by foul play and Cory helps with figuring out the circumstances that led to it with his hunting skills. He’s hunting the killer.
“Wind River” is a slow paced thriller for sure. The thing that kept me interested was finding out what happened to Natalie. As more pieces of the puzzle were coming to together the more intense the film got. The final 45 minutes were very stress induced to me. I wanted to find spoilers about what was going to happen just to ease my anxiety but I stayed away and I’m glad I did because the shock of what went down during the climax of the film was worth seeing play out. I even shed a few tears watching the end. It was a gripping story about survival, grief, and moving past the trauma that happens in life. Outstanding film!
