During the height of the pandemic in 2020 many television and film productions were shut down. Leaving the industry in limbo, creatives were struggling to not only stay employed like the rest of us, but to remain productive to not go insane. Netflix’s upcoming film “Malcolm & Marie” was born from that concept.

Sam Levinson, the mastermind behind HBO’s Euphoria (which stars Zendaya), wrote and directed this project during Covid and shot the film in a little over two weeks last June. Of course strict Covid protocols were in place and “Malcolm & Marie” became the first film to be completed in the pandemic.

John David Washington and Zendaya star in the film as a couple who are not showing a love story, but a story about love and I’m into it. Washington plays Malcolm, a filmmaker who returns home with his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) after the biggest night of his career – a movie premiere that could make or break his name in the industry. Marie feels slighted after Malcolm forgets to mention her in his thanks; given she was a huge inspirational part of the film that was just screened. The drama unfolds when the couple is alone as the film explores the true depths of a relationship – the beautiful and ugly moments.

“Malcolm & Marie” comes to Netflix on February 5, 2021
