Happy Halloween Eve! The best Spooky Season treat is that my girl Ariana Grande dropped her sixth studio album positions today. I simply adore AG and there has been a lack of good Grande music this year. Those tracks she did with Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga were just not it for me so I was anxiously waiting for positions to drop.

Grande released a track list leading up to the release of her sixth studio album and man oh man my sis ain’t playing around. From the titles alone this album will be Ariana’s sexual awakening and I’m so on board with it. Ariana is not prude when it comes to singing about sex in her music though. In the past it’s just been hidden in innuendos, but I think she’s going to be more in your face this time around. So let’s go! Here’s my breakdown of each track from my FIRST listen letting you know if you should PLAY or PASS.

1. shut up

Ariana love some strings and she’s going to use them anytime she gets. “shut up” is bascially about people needing to mind their business. She’s always going to sound good on a track, but this wasn’t an impressive strong opener for the album. PASS

2. 34+35

My first instinct when I saw this title was to add the numbers up and when I did I said “opp.” The beat will keep your head nodding and the lyrics got me hype. Go off Whoriana! Math class. PLAY

3. motive feat Doja Cat

The fans have been waiting for a Grande and Doja collab and by the fans I mean me. I love both of these artists so I was happy to get a track with both of my girls on it. The beat is a yes. The vocals are a hell yes. Doja’s flow is perfect on this track. This is the best track so far for me. PLAY

4. just like magic

“I get every thing I want because I attract it.” I know that’s right. This is for the manifesting girls and for the ones who have no times for games. Password to your phone? Who does that? This is a great song to just drive and vibe to feeling yourself about all the positivity you’re bringing to your life. PLAY

5. off the table feat TheWeeknd

Welcome to “Love Me Harder,” the stronger version. The instant this track began I knew I loved it. The Weeknd coming in just made the song better. Ari and his voice are butter together. Just imagine being with your bae with this playing. Ugh this might be my favorite song. PLAY

6. six thirty

This song didn’t initially show up on my download and maybe that was for a reason. I feel like I could easily forget this song. Ari is always going to deliver vocals, but the arrangement is not making me like the song. PASS

7. safety net feat Ty Dolla $ign

I love how this album is pure R&B Ariana for the most part. That’s where her voice really shines and it was truly designed for it. All of these tracks are so mellow and songs you can play and vibe to. I love it. This song is about falling in love without the clutch of a “safety net” and I like it. PLAY

8. my hair

We know Ariana’s ponytail is her signature hairstyle but she doesn’t mind her man messing up her look in this song. The sax is a refreshing sound on “my hair.” This could easily be remixed into a jazz track and it works for me. PLAY

9. nasty

This is the track that Ari teased on Instagram and oh it lived up to the hype! From the title alone you already know what the song is about. Ladies grab your man and ask him what he waiting for. PLAY

10. west side

I’m getting sample vibe from this but I can’t recall what this song is giving me. I know I’m thoroughly enjoying this album so far. “west side” is so short though. This feels like an interlude and I’m mad I want more of this song. PLAY

11. love language

What’s Ariana Grande’s love language? Acts of service? Words of affirmation? Naw, baby is into loud ass music. What an aggressive way to start a track. Or maybe my volume was turnt too up. This isn’t what I was thinking when I saw the title for this track. It’s giving disco and a slowed down sister track of “Greedy.” I enjoy “Greedy,” but “love language” right now is a no for me and that ending was so random. I thought a new song started. PASS

12. positions

I must say when I first heard “positions” I didn’t think it was Ariana’s strongest first single from an album. I watched the video first before just listening to the track by itself and the political theme for the visual threw me off with the song. Listening to it solely without the video and it’s an OK song. Her vocals are good and the beat is catchy. It’s a song I don’t mind listening to. PLAY

13. obvious

Am I tripping or are these songs so short? I look down at the running time and they are damn near over. And that usually happens to the songs I like the most; “obvious” is one of them. Ari is ready to settle down and doesn’t want to spell it out for this guy. I feel that. Again, Ari got some good beats this time around for this album. Very much thank u, next album level but lighter. PLAY

14. pov

Last track of positions and it’s definitely a wind down track, but it’s a better ending than this album was a beginning. Once I learn the words I can feel me belting this song out like I can actually sing with a glass of wine in my hand and doing a full performance in my room. Way to go Ari you got another golden album on your hands. PLAY

This a strong body of work despite my few passes. I’m glad I actually got some good Ariana music in 2020. Have you listened to Ariana Grande’s Positions album yet? Which songs are your plays and passes? Share all your thoughts in the comments.
