Amazon teamed up Blumhouse productions to stream a series of films that have been labeled as “four unsettling films under one roof.” It’s the perfect way to get in the mood for Spooky Season and the first two films from the series have been released on Tuesday, October 6: “Black Box” and “The Lie.” If you have Amazon Prime then these two films are definitely worth a watch and below I tell you why and try to be as spoiler free as possible.
“Black Box”
In “Black Box” Mamoudou Athie stars a Nolan who is having trouble remembering his past after barely surviving a car accident. His adorable daughter Ava (Amanda Christine) helps him out with his day to day life and trying to get him to remember. Nolan later gets aid from Dr. Lillian Brooks (Phylicia Rashad) who has an experimental treatment called the black box that she promises will jog his memory. The premise is simple enough, but the mind bending quickly begins.
When Nolan starts remembering parts of his past it turns out that what he thinks he remembers may not be the truth. I don’t want to give the twist away but it’s something I didn’t see coming. I will say the big takeaways from this film is how amazing Amanda Christine is as Ava. She’s such a wonderful little actor and plays excellent opposite Athie. The other thing I noticed is that Phylicia Rashad has been playing these wacko roles lately. I’m looking at you “A Fall from Grace.” I mean she’s good at being bad. “Black Box” overall was a slow burn with an ok pay off.
I give “Black Box” three Glambergirlblog kisses 💋💋💋.
“The Lie”
Joey King stars as troubled teen Kayla in “The Lie.” Kayla’s parents Jay (Peter Sarsgaard) and Rebecca (Mireille Enos) are divorced and it’s clearly weighing on her. After Rebecca drops Kayla off to Jay, she is suppose to be on her way to a ballet retreat but things take a twisted turn when Kayla’s friend Britney (Devery Jacobs) is spotted on the route there and the pair give her a ride. The teens end up in the woods and Britney gets killed by Kayla. Yikes. Jay and Rebecca then proceed to do all they can to protect their daughter.
This was another slow burn I must be honest. The big crime happened early on in the film so there wasn’t no big shock there it was all the events that happened after. Kayla’s nonchalance about killing her friend was upsetting leaving her parents stressed. The ending had me wanting to smack some people. I’ll leave it at that.
