Since as far back as I can remember hair specifically pertaining to black women has been a hot button topic. Black women with their natural hair wasn’t always deemed as desirable and acceptable in society. Go back to 1989 and you’ll get the plot for Hulu’s upcoming dark comedy “Bad Hair.”
Written and directed by Justin Simien, “Bad Hair” enters the Horror satire realm when a young woman gets a weave to fit into the norm of the “image-obsessed” music television industry. When things start advancing for the woman in her career her hair begins to cause more problems than it’s worth. Yaani King Mondschein, Lena Waithe, James Van Der Beek, Jay Pharoah, Ashley Blaine Featherson, Vanessa Williams, Kelly Rowland, and Elle Lorraine star in the film.
From the first teaser trailer it’s clear to see the undertones this movie will have about the issues black women face with hair and how conforming to something that’s not true to yourself can cause your ultimate destruction. I love a good dark comedy, so I may have to get Hulu again come spooky season to watch this one.
“Bad Hair” streams on Hulu October 23, 2020.
