Imagine being able to tap into an unprecedented amount of power specifically catered to your genetic make up for five minutes at a time. Would you be willing to risk it all for pure power? That’s the premise posed in the Netflix Sci-fi/Action film “Project Power” starring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback. This weekend I checked out the Netflix original film and I’m ready to give you my thoughts. SOME SPOILERS AHEAD

When I first heard about the premise of the film I was intrigued. It had elements of “X-Men” to me with the supernatural powers and I was curious to see how to powers would manifest. “Project Power” is based in New Orleans with a mysterious pill circulating the streets that everyone is trying to get their hands on. Once the pill is ingested the individual has an increment of five minutes to experience that power; results do vary.

The film opens up with literal pill pusher Robin (Fishback) trying to made a sell but it goes wrong. You think you’re going to see the power pill in action, but you don’t get to see any of that until a good 15 minutes into the film when Jamie Foxx’s character Art enters the story and encounters Newt (Machine Gun Kelly). Art is trying to locate the source of the power pills and we later discover exactly why. He crosses paths with Robin and local cop Frank (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) when they team up to stop the spread of the power pill in the city.

There was a good amount of action in this film, but I wanted to see more aspects of the power pill. It just wasn’t enough for me. The pill was said to take elements of animalistic qualities and enhance them in humans and I wanted to see the levels to it. Jamie Foxx’s character was hyped to have this great power that he was holding on to when the moment was right and when that moment came I was like “that’s it.” I also think the climax was a bit long. I found myself fast forwarding because it was being dragged out to me. The film did have some funny elements, but the plot of making Robin wanting to be a rapper was an afterthought to me. That did nothing to add to the story and was random whenever she started rapping.

The chemistry between Foxx, Gordon-Levitt, and Fishback was enjoyable to watch. Very different actors who brought their A-game to this project, no pun intended. Overall “Project Power” was worth seeing. I wouldn’t want to see a follow up film because I don’t think this story needs to continue. With the way the plot was set up, the conclusion was truly a good end that wrapped everything up nicely. I give “Project Power” three Glambergirlblog kisses 💋💋💋
