2020 has been a poop tornado until now. After countless tweets to the streaming service and mentions about wanting to watch some of the most iconic black sitcoms from the mid 90’s to mid 2000’s, Netflix is finally complying and honestly every time I think about it I get so damn excited.
On Wednesday, Strong Black Lead (the component of Netflix that celebrates black talent) announced on Twitter that the streaming service has acquired the rights to seven staple black sitcoms and rightfully so Twitter freaked out. Starting August 1st get ready to binge kicking off with Moesha. On August 15th seasons 1-3 of The Game returns to the streaming service. Sister Sister is coming September 1st, Girlfriends on September 11th, The Parkers on October 1st, and finally Half & Half and One on One coming October 15th.
This is major! I can’t tell you how bad I’ve been wanting to see Moesha in particular, but having all these others shows that I watched on the regular coming as well to Netflix is just making my heart sing. To celebrate these shows coming to streaming I want to share some of the things that stood out to me the most when thinking back on these shows. There are so many, but I’ll stick to listing three.
Moesha
*When Moesha turned 18 and all her old boyfriends showed up to her birthday party thanks to her friends, but she only had eyes for Channing, her photographer teacher.
*Frank and Dee coming back home to find Q and Moesha up in her bedroom. Scandalous.
*Dorian getting taken off to boot camp and finally calling “Uncle Frank” dad. Frank done had a love child. Wild times.
The Game S1-3
*So many for The Game, but first things first Derwin cheating on Girl Melanie with Drew.
*Tasha Mack’s “emotional walls” and singing Rihanna’s “Take A Bow” to Rick Fox.
*Derwin getting Jaynay pregnant.
Sister Sister
*Tamera getting her hair straightened for the first time and thought she was hot shit.
*Tamera being jealous of Tia spending time with her dad and dreamed them up on a talk show about Tia stealing her dad.
*The gang went to Freaknik and Tia and Tyreke got back together.
Girlfriends
*Toni and Joan reconciling their friendship at church with Donnie McClurkin giving a word and singing “We Fall Down.” I bawl every single time I watch that episode.
*Maya cheating with crazy ass Stan and Darnell finding out. That “Move Maya” still sends chills.
*Lynn’s sister coming to town, Toni calling her a “wigger” and all hell broke loose at Situations.
The Parkers
*The American Idol spoof with Kim, Stevie, and T putting their spin on Lionel Richie’s “Hello.”
*Anytime Nikki ran into the professor and he would call her all types of names.
*The Wild West episode and all those bangers, but specifically the dance battle with Nikki and Truth Hurts.
Half & Half
*Big Dee Dee and Phyllis trading insults every time they saw each other. Hilarious.
* Mona and Spencer’s romantic build up. I don’t remember how it came to an end or did it, so I’m curious to see how that plays out.
* The theme song. Sitcoms back then had the best theme songs and I just remember not wanting to miss this one. “Through this journey of discovery.”
One on One
*Breanna and Spirit trying out for the cheerleading squad
*Omarion being a guest star as Nightmare. “Nighty, night Nightmare.”
*Duane being funny whenever he was on screen and falling in love with Candy.
