“As An Intellectual:” I Realized Dan and Blair Were The Superior ‘Gossip Girl’ Couple

Can’t blame this on Coronavirus or being self quarantined. I often think of random Gossip Girl moments and thanks to Netflix I have all six seasons at my disposal. I remember first watching the show back in 2007 on mute because I was obsessed with the clothes. One day the mute button came off, I actually found myself getting into the plot, and XOXO…I became a fan.

Avid watchers of the show know Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester) were end game. “3 words, 8 letters, say it and I’m yours.” I mean COME ON! C and B were programmed to be “that” couple for us. I get it. I was drinking the Kool-aid too. I was all about Chair when I initially watched, but viewing the series again with fresh and adult eyes I realized one thing….Dan (Penn Badgley) and Blair is where it’s at.

Me as an intellectual and re-watching Gossip Girl I can appreciate Dan and Blair. I know blasphemy, but Dan and Blair were so cute. I absolutely loved them as friends and they had so much in common. I don’t want to put Dan and Chuck against one another and compare what one did for Blair versus the other, so I’ll highlight why Dan makes Blair her best self and why they’re the superior GG couple. I guess I should say *SPOILERS AHEAD*, although it has been damn near 10 years since the show was out.

A princess’ aide

After Blair got hoodwinked into what she thought was her happily ever after with Prince Louis she needed to make a quick and discreet exit from her wedding from hell. My good old boy Dan was there to the rescue giving Blair solace and attempted to get her out of the city as quickly as possible. Homie was about to spend his last dime to help B and reassured her that what she was doing was best for her peace of mind.

A meeting of the intellectual minds

This was peak friendship. After a summer alone in the city a friendship bloomed between Dair. Their shared love for the arts started non friend dates (They didn’t want to admit they actually got along well together). The two met at museums, art exhibits, movie theaters and often for coffee, but a night watching one of my favorite movies, “Rosemary’s Baby,” might be my favorite moment between them. They could have an intellectual conversation that they never could have with anyone else.

Wonderful competing interns at W

When Blair decided the next step in her plan for world domination was to get into the editorial world, she snagged an internship at W. This was the one thing that she didn’t scheme her way into, until like Dan who had Lily – his step mom at the time- call in a favor. In true Gossip Girl nature the pair began to compete to become the supreme intern only to sabotage themselves and got fired. But since Dan was starting to fall for Blair he took the blame for their public embarrassment to get Blair the internship back. He even stepped in to help her when she landed a permanent job there and was over her head with work, school, and scheming.

Finally Queen B

All throughout the series Blair had a queen mentality. She was the queen of Constance, the queen of the Upper East Side, and was on the fast track to becoming a real life queen if her marriage to Louis panned out. It didn’t and while she was in a relationship with Dan he noticed she was hesitant to sign her divorce papers. She never got to truly feel like a royal and be adored by her subjects so Dan made it happen. He got her to dress in her best gown, go to the Met steps, and rock a tiara. There, loyal Blair stans ran to get photos and praise Blair as the queen she always knew she was. Chuck could never.

They say if you love something

Blair went to see Dan when her and Louis were having troubles right before they got married. She was having cold feet and wanted to chose between Chuck and Louis. Mind you Dan was in love with Blair during this time and stepped up in major ways to be her friend because he knew what she needed to be happy. He took her to Chuck as much as it pained him. Always putting her feelings first.

Blair was her witty, beautiful, dictator of taste best self while Dan got some writing done, transcended from being the outsider he never wanted to be, and seemed the happiest he’s been in a few seasons when Dair was a thing. These two could have ruled the UES.

Do you agree with me? Were Dan and Blair the best Gossip Girl couple? Or do you like someone better? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
