What do some girls typically do when they get dumped by the guy they feel is the love of their life. Chop off all their hair in a way to shed the damage from the past, cry while eating junk food and binging television, get a pet to provide unconditional love, find a new tribe, oh and blow up Ace Chemicals – the place where your torrid love affair really began. Ok this may not be true for all girls, but it’s very true for Harley Quinn
“Birds of Prey,” (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is the first stand alone Harley Quinn movie in the DC film universe. The project premiered in theaters over the weekend with wild reception of how Margot Robbie perfectly encaptured the essence of the neurotic and loveable Harley Quinn. I’ll be upfront now to mention I know little to nothing about the deeply rooted and obsessive nature of comic book based films. Harley Quinn and The Joker were my favorite parts of David Ayer 2016 “Suicide Squad” so when it was announced Margot Robbie would reprise her role as the kooky character I knew I would see the film hands down.
Directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, on paper “Birds of Prey” is about Quinn joining superheroes Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to save Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) who is being hunted by demented crime lord Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) aka Black Mask. In my reality “Birds of Prey” is a colorful, comedic thrill ride with Harley Quinn kicking ass and gaining a girl squad after emancipating herself from The Joker’s shadow.
I went into this film with some background knowledge of the superheroes having done some research on origin stories of the comic ladies depicted in the movie, but essentially I did not pay any attention to reviews or anyone’s opinion on the project. First thing I will say about “Birds of Prey” is that the plot was ALL.OVER.THE.PLACE. It was like watching a child have a train of thought and then get distracted when a butterfly or a puppy walks by, but the chaotic narrative of the plot equally matched the deranged personality that is Harleen Quinzel so it works in a way.
I don’t want to give too much away but if I had to describe this film in one word it would be FUN. Not too often in films do you get to see women being action stars. I don’t usually gravitate towards the action genre, but when I do I would like to see women being more than the sex object in a skimpy outfit. While these women are wildly attractive, without baring too much skin, the attraction for me comes from them standing on their own outside of the men who are trying to posses, degrade, and dismiss them.
The climatic fight scene towards the end was truly a pleasure to watch, especially on the big screen with the pacing, editing, and soundtrack reaching a dynamic that was thrilling to see. Throughout the entire film however there are many fight sequences that had me smiling because of the perfect editing (the right amount of slow-mo to the real time impacts) and how the girls were really holding their own against men twice their size. I must also mention that the ensemble cast (Smollett-Bell, Winstead, Perez, and Basco) had me girl crushing hard. It would be madness to not explore this world further and have all the women reprise their roles because the chemistry between them was immaculately crafted.
While the girls did dominate the screen Ewan McGregor’s Roman Sionis and Chris Messina’s Victor Zsasz brought an intriguing dicotomy to “Birds of Prey” that I wish I had more of. Knowing how the film ends…well. “Birds of Prey” is a film that you could easily watch again and again and find something new to dissect each time.
“Birds of Prey” made me laugh, kept me in quessing, and ignited my inner “boss bitch.” I give “Birds of Prey” four Glambergirlblog kisses 💋💋💋💋. The film is now showing in theaters nationwide.
