Netflix’s ‘You’ Without Joe’s Narration Is Funnier Than It Should Be

People often wonder what the attraction to the problematic yet addicting Netflix series You starring Penn Badgley is and for me it’s a no brainer. Outside of being wildly infatuated with Penn, his cadence and narration throughout the series is what really makes it entertaining to watch, but imagine if there were no Joe Goldberg voiceovers at all.

Netflix did just that with two clips showcasing moments from both seasons of You where Joe’s (Badgley) narration in the scene has been removed. I laughed way harder than I should have watching these clips, but they are pure comedy and proves two things to me. In the words of Forty Quinn (James Scully): “it’s creepy when you get quiet like that” and the narration is truly another character in the show.

A few YouTube comments pointed out since Penn didn’t have to memorize a lot of dialogue to play Joe he was “acting with his expressions and body language all this while” and without the voiceovers Joe “look like he’s actually dumb.” Both valid points and after you watch the clips you’ll catch the vibe.

Season 1 and 2 of You is streaming now on Netflix with season 3 coming in 2021; the writers are officially back in the office (CC: Sera Gamble).

Watch clips from You season 1 and 2 without Joe’s voiceovers in the clips below and try not to laugh. Would the show have the same effect without Joe’s narration? Share your thoughts in the comments.
