You know Netflix loves to suggest a show. It will be highlighted at the top of your home screen for days, maybe weeks, until you finally decide to watch. That’s what happened to me with The Circle.
The show is mirrored off a UK series by the same name and is described as a reality-competition where players can “be whoever and do whatever it takes to win.” Hosted by Michelle Buteau, the series premiered on January 1 with a cluster of 4 episodes about an hour each. New clusters would drop every Wednesday until the conclusion which happens to be this upcoming Wednesday, January 15.
So basically contestants are placed in secluded apartments within one building and they communicate through a social media app called The Circle. You create a profile and try to gain influence within the group. Top influencers have the power to “block” or vote off a player each episode and the last person standing will win a monetary prize. Simple enough right, but here is where the hilarity comes in. Since you can be anyone you want online, a true testament to actual social media, players can catfish – some of them are – to create an idealistic persona that will be accepted in The Circle.
Alliances are formed and with every elimination true identities are revealed. It’s all really funny. I’m shocked at how quickly I became glued to this show and involved with these contestants. It’s really interesting to see how much thought goes into creating an online image from other people’s perspective. I feel like we are in an age where creating a digital footprint has become the norm and so much of how we interact and relate to people is based on the impressions we get from a filtered version of ourselves. This show is proving that more than ever. I must say…I’m entertained.
The Circle is now streaming on Netflix.
