Elizabeth Banks pulled triple duty having written the screenplay, directed, and has a starring role in the 2019 “Charlie’s Angels.” Since the announcement of the reboot, hardcore fans of the 2000 and 2003 “Charlie’s Angels” film starring Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore were very vocal about not wanting or planning to see the reboot. Reboots have been sweeping Hollywood in recent years and while some are insanely uncalled for there are a few that I was willing to give a chance.
I never saw the original television series of Charlie’s Angels, or that short-lived 2011 ABC flop, but I did watch the Lucy, Drew, and Cameron films and enjoyed those. Since they are currently on Netflix I re-watched them to get in the mood for the new film, yet I wasn’t that invested in the franchise where I felt some type of way about new Angels coming to the picture. So I headed to the theaters this weekend to check out the new ““Charlie’s Angels” and now it’s time for another Glamberous Movie Review. Beware of SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Plot
In similar nature to the films, “Charlie’s Angels” open with a covert mission displaying the skills of the Angels and establishing a bad guy, Jonny Smith (Chris Pang). We then met Elena (Naomi Scott), an engineer at a tech company who wants to warn the CEO Alexander Brock (Sam Claflin) about a flaw in soon to be released energy-saving system that can be deadly weaponized. Noah Centineo as Langston, Elena’s co-worker, is also thrown into the mix solely to get the young girls in the movies. His role serves as no real point and his screen time is minimal just a FYI. Elena however is ignored about her concerns with the pending technology and wants to go above her boss Peter Fleming’s (Nat Faxon) head and enlists the help of the Townsend Agency. Insert the Angels.
The Angels
Sabina (Kristen Stewart) and Jane (Ella Balinska) are the first Angels we meet at the start of the film and while they worked together on a mission it’s clear they’re only work associates. They get paired up on the mission to help Elena and the three of them along with Bosley (Elizabeth Banks) form an unshakable bond. I must note that there are several Bosley’s in the film. The role of Bosley is a rank in the Townsend Agency to serve as guides to a plethora of Angels all over the world. Patrick Stewart (who plays John Bosley) and Djimon Hounsou (who plays Edgar Bosley) also have pivotal roles in the story. Pay attention. Whether is was intentional or not, there were very obvious and subtle hints at the former Angels: like Cameron’s dance number on the multi color dance floor, old disguises, and photos of the former Angels.
The dynamic formed between the girls was fun to watch even more so seeing the actresses in countless press interviews boast about each other. I think the relationship they formed off-screen played a huge part in why I liked seeing them on-screen together. The chemistry worked for me and you could pinpoint the moment they really became the new trio Charlie’s Angels. Stewart for sure was used to be the comedic aspect of the Angels with Balinska taking more of the action star side (See more details in ‘The Action’), and Scott was the brains and heart of the trio. I enjoyed watching these girls. The trailer really doesn’t do them justice because they were actually a delight and this movie is a true exhilarating good time.
The Action
I mentioned before how I re-watched the “Charlie’s Angels” films in prep for this one. A huge difference in this new film is the use of guns and explosives by the Angels. Drew Barrymore, who brought the film rights to Charlie’s Angels and was a producer on the first two films/executive producer on this one, was very adamant about the Angels not needing guns to defend themselves in the films she worked on since she has a strict stance on gun control. So that immediately stood out when watching this.
Jonathan Tucker has a role as assassin Hodak who goes toe to toe with Ella Balinska several times throughout the film marking many of the more exciting scene sequences to watch. I hate to use the term bad ass but it’s really no other way to describe Balinska’s character where you can get it. As much as I love Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska’s Jane is my favorite angel. She had many of the stand out stunts and looked damn good kicking ass. Ella Balinska did most of her own stunts BTW and she’s only 23. Just imagine the action star she can become. She’s awesome!
The way this films ends there is definitely room for a sequel and to create a new franchise with this cast. I know the film didn’t make much at the box office and it’s been getting slammed left and right, but I loved every minute of this film and loved the leading ladies. I had my apprehensions about the new trio, but the chemistry these ladies have is truly apparent on-screen and I would enjoy watching more adventures with these girls. I give “Charlie’s Angels” four Glambergirlblog kisses 💋💋💋💋
