If you think one “The Little Mermaid” is enough for the new generation then guess again. The 1989 Disney animated film is a beloved classic, but we’re in the live-action, remake era of Hollywood and Ariel is not exempt from being tampered with.
A “The Little Mermaid Live!” is coming to ABC next month apart of The Wonderful World of Disney franchise. Now if the casting news got you a bit mixed up then you’re not the only one. “The Little Mermaid Live!” is NOT the same as “The Little Mermaid” live-action produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda. That film’s cast to date has: Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Awkwafina as Scuttle. The hunt for Prince Eric is still on and this film will combine computer-generation and live-action aspects.
Now “The Little Mermaid Live!” will bring “Moana” actress Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula, John Stamos as Chef Louis, Graham Phillips as Prince Eric, and Shaggy as Sebastian. A first look at the cast was revealed over the weekend with mixed reviews; as much of these beloved films are met with. I personally enjoy all the live adaptions the networks air, so we’ll see how this one does.
“The Little Mermaid Live!” presented by The Wonderful World of Disney air Tuesdays, November 5 at 8/7 c on ABC.
