If you missed the memo we are in the beautiful beginning stages of Spooky Season 2019. That’s when lovers of all things supernatural, haunting, and downright scary celebrate all month-long until the most terrifying day of the year, Halloween. I usually like to honor the season by watching all my horror genre favs and discover new ones to add to the roster. “Freaks”movie starring Emile Hirsch and Lexy Kolker is just that film that can be added to any Sci-Fi watcher’s list of things to view for Spooky Season.
Directed and written by Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky, “Freaks” follows a bold, young girl named Chloe (Kolker) who yearns to discover the world outside of confinement which her overbearing and paranoid father (Hirsch) believes he is protecting her from. Glambergirlblog got to chat with Lexy Kolker about her role and how working in a Sci-Fi/Thriller setting enhanced her skills as an actress.
“The plot of this movie is definitely about a seven-year old girl, Chloe, who has never been outside or ever experienced trees or any of those things. All she’s ever wanted is to go outside. And then she finally gets the courage to go outside, but she’s always been scared because her dad tells her that it’s not safe and that the bad guys will hurt her if she goes outside, but she never really knows why,” Kolker shared with GGB. Upon going outside, Chloe encounters the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern) leading to a series of weird events. “I definitely think that if I were in her position, I would do the same thing. I feel like we’re both very courageous and we’re both very curious because when there’s something that we’re curious about we don’t just want to hold it. We do relate in some ways.”
Along with Emile Hirsch, Amanda Crew was another co-star Kolker got to work closely with and learned about her craft from. “They are both phenomenal people and actors. Emile actually, what I loved about him was he would never only be focusing on himself when he was with filming. He would always give me different ways to say the lines. He would say,’Okay Lexy why don’t you say the line this way, or maybe that way.’ To me that was just so amazing because a lot of actors, they worry about themselves, and they let that the other actors do what they do, but Emile was so inspirational because he was really helping me.
“And Amanda, she was great because she was setting up the lines perfect. And she would also give me advice like that. And that was just a great experience for me because if my first really intense movie wasn’t with them, I don’t think it would’ve been as great of an experience as it was.”
Getting into character was like creating a boding scream queen. Lexy fully engrossed herself in the role and allowed herself to truly channel Chloe and leave Lexy off-screen completely. “It was one scene in the movie where me and Emile were yelling at each other. That scene really got to me. It felt really real to me and I had to take a break because it got so strong. Then Emile gave me this amazing talk and he said it’s really, really good to feel what the character is feeling and being in the moment because that’s what actors wait to feel their whole life. That just helped me so much more because since it felt real for me, I did start to cry for real. I decided when we started filming that scene again, a few weeks later, I decided that if I felt like that then incorporate it in the scene and just cry because how do I know that Chloe wouldn’t.”
Lexy ensures Sci-Fi fans that this is the film you must see because it’s a perfect mixture of a plethora of genres. “It’s Sci-Fi, Thriller, Suspense, and a little Comedy. It’s not super-duper scary if you really think about it, so if you’re into Sci-Fi definitely go see it because ‘Freaks’ will be a great movie for you to see.”
Up next, Lexy Kolker is in the pre-production stages of more horror films and has a Star Wars commercial in circulation.
