While some seven-year-old children don’t have the slightest clue what they want to be when they grow, Sophiánna Smith was in three-hour musical theater production rehearsals developing her eclectic skills for the entertainment industry she would soon enter.
Smith is in the early stages of being a teenager, but she already has actress, singer/songwriter, dancer, and model attributed to her name. Glambergirlblog.com got to chat with Sophiánna about entering the industry, the PBS singing competition she’s in, and working on her first feature film; Netflix Original “Mercy Black” where she plays young Rebecca.
“When I auditioned for Rebecca I filmed it [a self tape]. My mom had a ring light and she got her phone and she recorded me doing the scene and she recited the other lines,” the Texas native shared with GGB. “I submitted my self tape audition. I didn’t know what to think. I thought I did good, but I didn’t hear [anything] for a while, so I didn’t think I booked it. Then my mom got a call, she came running out and screaming. She was all ‘Sophi you booked it’ and I’m all like ‘WHAT, what are you talking about?’ She told me I booked “Mercy Black” and I was all ‘YES’ because even though I love watching Disney and Nickelodeon and all those type of shows, deep in my heart I have a love for horror and thriller movies.”
Despite her love for horror, the 2017 “It” did frighten Sophiánna; her Netflix film was the other. “Every single time I read the script there was a new twist and turn. I wasn’t sure if Mercy Black was going to be super scary from the character background when I auditioned… but after I read the script I couldn’t sleep for 3 weeks, so yeah!,” she revealed.
In between gigs Sophiánna is booking commercials and is also apart of a competition to reach a broader audience for her music. “My goal is to release some of the songs that I have written. I’m also competing in PBS’ Celebration of Music. It’s a show on PBS, a talent search that’s showcasing the best, young musical talent across America. I’m going to be competing in San Angelo, Texas. There are two winners, a fan favorite – which I’m hoping to win and then there’s a producer’s pick.”
With a bright future ahead of, Sophiánna offered some words of encouragement for anyone embarking in a career in the entertainment world. “My advice would be to other people is try your best and be yourself. Keep working hard. Work hard for what you want because everyone can achieve great things in life.”
