Black Mirror season 5 is coming to Netflix in a few short weeks and not only did we get new trailers for the three episode season, but we got title names as well. Once again social issues and the effects of technology will be at the forefront of the anthology series by Charlie Brooker. Let’s break down the trailers shall we.
Black Mirror: “Smithereens”
The official description for this episode reads, “A cab driver with an agenda becomes the center of attention on a day that rapidly spirals out of control” with the tagline “Don’t forget to rate your drivers” on YouTube trailer. Already I can see this will be tackling the dark side of ride sharing and a system that rates individuals on the most mundane of things. Very much bringing us back to season 3 and “Nosedive.” All of the Black Mirror episodes in some way reference one another, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the “Nosedive” technology showed up in this episode.
Black Mirror: “Striking Vipers”
The official synopsis for this episode reads, “Two estranged college friends reunite in later life, triggering a series of events that could alter their lives forever” with the tagline “Is there someplace else you’d rather be?” Immediately I thought of season 1 and “The Entire History of You” with the technology shown in this trailer. Clearly the main male lead (Anthony Mackie) is feeling he’s missing out on some aspect of life being a family man. In “The Entire History of You” you could go back to any part of someone’s life using the technology encrypted within the body, so maybe the technology here allows you go to another dimension. Kind of like “Surrogates.” I’m intrigued.
Black Mirror: “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too”
Lastly, this episode is described as “A lonely teenager yearns to connect with her favorite pop star – whose charmed existence isn’t quite as rosy it appears…” with the tagline “Ashley, are you ok?” Again, I’m being reminded of Black Mirror past episodes and I’m thinking “Fifteen Million Merits” from season 1. Not as robotic as riding bikes to gain credits, but with the aspect of fame not being what it’s cracked up to be. People have been giving this episode some hate already with Miley Cyrus being the face of it; like mainstream American actors haven’t been on this show before. Give the girl a break.
I love this show regardless and can’t wait to dig into the new episodes. Season 5 of Black Mirror streams only on Netflix starting June 5, 2019.
