In less than 30 days Guy Ritchie’s live-action “Aladdin” will be hitting theaters. I’ve been very vocal about my apprehensions of the film given the animated version is literally in my top Disney films and overall favorite film of all time. It gives me the feels.
Since the film is so close to debuting, Will Smith, who plays The Genie, is in full promo mode. Smith appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon this week and talked about his initial reserve of stepping into the iconic role Robin Williams brought to life in the 1992.
Smith said when he got presented the idea to play Genie in the film his first reaction was “Hell no.” He knew how good Robin Williams was in the film and didn’t want to take on that task, but he changed his mind when he spent time with the director and the material; specifically the music.
When tackling the infamous “Friend Like Me” he thought of “Impeach the President” by The Honeydrippers. Questlove from the Roots began to play some of the music and Smith jumped into the updated version of “Friend Like Me.” THIS GOT ME ON BOARD!
“Aladdin” is in theaters May 24, 2019.
Watch Will Smith tease “Friend Like Me” from the live-action “Aladdin” in the clip from The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in the clip below. Are you feeling this version? Share your thoughts in the comments.
