The live-action “Aladdin” starring Mena Massoud as the title character, Will Smith as Genie, and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine is less than a month away from hitting theaters and the promotion is in full swing. I must admit, I’m still not 100% on board. Will I go see it in the theaters, duh, but I’m not going to like it.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, the live-action “Aladdin” is an adaptation of the 1992 Disney animated classic following the heart of gold street rat Aladdin navigating his way through Agrabah and trying to gain the love of Princess Jasmine. Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen also appear in the film. The score and new recordings of the original Alan Menken and Howard Ashman songs will also be in the movie with two new songs written by Menken and Oscar and Tony Award®-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
A new TV spot for the film titled “Rags to Wishes” shares more sneak peeks and glimpses at some of the big music numbers. If you are a fan of the animated film, like me, you can already see how this film will diverge from the original. On a positive note it looks like it was shot well. The costumes and set design are impeccable, but I think it’s Will Smith as the Genie that’s stopping me from getting on board. I’ll find out for sure next month.
“Aladdin” comes to theaters nationwide May 24.
