Back in December Entertainment Weekly released the first look at the anticipated re-telling live action Disney film “Aladdin.” The preview was received with mixed reviews and I was one of those on the fence consumers with my love of the 1992 animated “Aladdin” being next level. With the Genie, played by Robin Williams prior, being a major staple in the franchise, fans had concerns when they saw Will Smith, who plays the Genie in the re-telling, on the cover of EW NOT blue. He assured fans to have faith that they would be pleased in his adaptation. Welllllll.

During the 2019 Grammy awards a new trailer for “Aladdin” dropped and I must say I was pretty excited. The second I heard the music I looked up with stars in the my eyes. The sight of Agrabah, the Cave of Wonders, Abu, Iago, Carpet, and Rajah sent my heart soaring.

Then in the final climatic moments of the trailer the blue smoke began to transcend out of the golden lamp and I thought ‘this is it. The first look at blue Genie,’ and I just.

The Guy Ritchie directed film is already taking a slight departure with added characters, Dalia (Nasim Pedrad), Prince Anders (Billy Magnussen), and Hakim (Numan Acar), but the Genie has many scratching their heads after the trailer and honestly there are a few things that has me side eyeing this remake.

I really don’t want no rapping Genie. For some reason that’s the vibe I’m getting. And why does Aladdin have a shirt on? Not to objectify him or anything, but in the animated film our favorite street rat could barely afford food how did he afford this full ensemble? Jafar is hot, yes, but in hindsight I think I would have wanted a creepy, old royal vizier. Someone mentioned Sir Ben Kingsley and I think he would have been perfect. And I still want Jack Black as Genie.

Along with Smith, Mena Massoud plays the title character, Naomi Scott is Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari is Jafar, and Navid Negahban is the Sultan. Alan Menken provides the score once more and the soundtrack will feature new recordings of the classics and two new songs. Despite all my apprehension I’m still going to go see “Aladdin” in the theaters opening weekend.

“Aladdin” releases May 24, 2019.
