‘Shameless’ Star Emmy Rossum Pens Emotional Goodbye To Her Character

After 9 amazing seasons it seems Shameless star Emmy Rossum is saying goodbye to her iconic role as Fiona Gallagher from the Showtime hit series and fans are not taking it well. I must say neither am I because I feel like MY big sister is leaving me.

On Thursday, Rossum shared a throwback photo of herself with cast mates on social media with the caption “It’s a hard thing to put into words, feelings. But I’m going to try” including a link to her Facebook page. Once on the page Rossum penned an extensive letter sharing sentiments about working on the show, growing up with her cast mates, and her love for playing Fiona Gallagher. I knew it was trouble when I walked in that link because it felt like a goodbye.

NObody and I mean NObody talks that way about a project unless they intend on leaving it. “It’s a hard thing to put into words, feelings. But I’m going to try,” Rossum began her letter continuing, “This business is always an adventure, full of travel and opportunities to tell stories. Usually as an actor, every few months, you travel to a new place, start a new project, build a new character, learn new rhythms, new inside jokes with your crew, make new friends.

Until “Shameless” came into my life 8 years ago, I led that kind of transient wonderful life of an actor. And I never realized how much I actually craved the kind of continuity that this show has given me. And given all of us in the crew. Season after season I’m amazed that our same crew comes back. And it’s not just because it’s a wonderfully written, wonderfully layered show. There are these real connections, real friendships that bring us back season after season after season.”

Emmy ended the note saying, “I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.” Sorry Em I can’t. I’m really bothered by this news and I feel like it put a damper on the season 9 premiere coming up in two weeks knowing it will be Fiona’s last. Ugh I can’t.

Season 9 of Shameless premieres Sunday, Sept. 9th on Showtime.
