The month of May is Mental Health Awareness month and with shows like Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why bringing issues of depression, suicide, bullying, and rape to the forefront of conversations that need to be had; Glambergirblog sat down with Jaynay C. Johnson, MFT, Dear Teen Self Author and Teen Therapist, to get her expert opinion on how the viral series is handling the “tough issues” and how we can better take care of ourselves mentally.
Last time GGB caught up with Johnson it was back in 2015 around the time her teen self-help book was published. Since then “The Teen Whisperer” has been featured in Essence and Huffington Post as part of their ‘10 Black Female Therapist You Should Know.’ She released a journal to help teens navigate difficult situations before they get into crisis mode and she just wrapped a multi-city brunch tour that exposed young girls to the benefit of brunching to connect with other positive young women.
Sitting down with Glambergirlblog to discuss 13 Reasons Why revealed Johnson’s initial issues with the series, why putting trigger warnings in front of sensitive subject matter is vital in today’s social media age, where accountability lies on the subject of bullying, and more!
Watch Teen Therapist and Author Jaynay C. Johnson share her thoughts on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, express the importance of trigger warnings, and offer self mental health tips in the clips below. Share your thoughts in the comments.
