So the trailer for “Crazy Rich Asians” dropped a few days ago at this point and I can’t seem to get it out of my mind, so of course I have to share it with my GGB readers.
The film is based on the 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan which went on to become a best seller. The novel is the first in a chain of books: China Rich Girlfriend (2015) and Rich People Problems (2017.) The novels have a very important meaning for Kwan for it was meant to “introduce a contemporary Asia to a North American audience.” Oh and we’re about to get educated.
Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and Nick Young (Henry Golding) have been dating for a year when he wants to travel “east” for Rachel to meet his family and attend his best friend’s wedding. Only “east” means traveling to Singapore for Rachel to experience his lavish life unbeknownst to her. Things become even more complicated with Nick’s mother Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) hating on their relationship and determined to put an end to it.
Not only does “Crazy Rich Asians” looks like a Jay Gatsby party IRL, but it brings together the likes of: Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, and Ken Jeong making the picture the first time an all Asian cast will be featured in 25 years.
“Crazy Rich Asians” will be in theaters August 17, 2018. Watch the trailer along with the two leads making a talk show appearance on Ellen to talk about the groundbreaking film in the clips below. Share your thoughts in the comments.
