The ‘Hairspray Live!’ Performances You Need To See Again

For one night only, NBC premiered their musical event of the season Hairspray Live! last night, Dec. 7, with eager fans of the musical, and the stars who were in it, watching with hopes the event would deliver. While “Hairspray” isn’t my favorite of musicals, I sure did enjoy this live production introducing Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad.

Based in 1960’s Baltimore, “Hairspray” tells the story of a young girl determined to get on an all white TV dance show and later integrate it during a time of despair and segregation.

Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle, Ariana Grande as Penny Pingleton, and Dove Cameron as Amber Von Tussle were honestly the highlights of the show. The vocals these ladies displayed were all my timeline seemed to talk about and for those who didn’t know who Dove was, they knew after her performance as Amber. The cast was a perfect blend of veteran talent with the lesser known making it easy to watch the actors play versus getting lost in a sea of A-listers just to get ratings.

The performances were colorful and vibrant and minus the few technical hiccups, like missed lighting cues and a cameraman visibly in the shot, Hairspray Live! was worth a watch.
