NBC Announces ‘Hairspray’ As Their Next Live Musical With Premiere Date

Are you ready to spray that hair because NBC has announced their fourth live musical adaptation that will air on the network this winter.

Hairspray the musical, which got not one but two film versions in the 1988 classic starring Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry, and Vitamin C and the 2007 reboot featuring an all-star cast with Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, and the list literally goes on with all the amazing talent that was in that film. NBC will now try to recreate that magic come December with their live production of the tale set in Baltimore during a time when the hopes of race integration were as high as the hair on the ladies and gentlemen in the 1960’s.

Previously, NBC has aired live productions of The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and most recently The Wiz and have high hopes they will produce another great show. In a statement NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said, “In keeping with our desire to bring the best of Broadway to our live musicals, we’ve assembled the Broadway dream team of Tony Award winners for Hairspray Live!”
