Only the most embarrassing and awkward thing that could possibly happen at a Miss Universe pageant happened on the live telecast on Sunday and no I’m not talking about tripping in an evening gown or saying a questionable answer during the Q&A segment. The wrong contestant was not only announced as the winner, but CROWNED.

The 2015 Miss Universe pageant aired live on FOX from Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Steve Harvey and Roselyn Sanchez served as hosts with Niecy Nash, Emmitt Smith, and Olivia Culpo. Things went pretty smooth until it came down to crowning time. There were 15 semi-finalists with Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Miss USA, Olivia Jordan, and Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, making it to the final three. Miss USA was announced as the second-runner up, correct, but it was later announced Miss Columbia had earned the title.

After the fanfare of Miss Columbia being literally crowned Miss Universe 2015, Harvey later returned to stage to reveal the mistake he made. He humbly apologized saying, “I will take responsibility. It was my mistake. Please don’t hold it against the ladies,” also stating that Miss Philippines was the correct name on the winner card. He later tweeted, “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Columbia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.” He added, “Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake,” ending with, “I don’t want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing.”

Of course social media erupted with memes and jokes on the matter. No matter what platform you’re on, search Miss Universe or Steve Harvey and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
