The Wiz Live! gets three new additions to the already stellar cast with Common, Ne-Yo, and Elijah Kelley joining the live adaptation of the Broadway play to premiere December 3 on NBC.
NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt announced the latest cast members at the 2015 Television Critics Association summer press tour at the end of last week. He said, “Ne-Yo is going to be playing the Tin Man, Elijah Kelley will be playing the Scarecrow, and Common will be playing the non-singing comedic role of the gatekeeper to Oz.”
NBC’S ‘THE WIZ LIVE!’ CASTS RISING STAR SHANICE WILLIAMS AS DOROTHY + FIND OUT THE LATEST ADDITIONS
The musically talented Ne-Yo has had past acting experience in “Stomp the Yard” (2007), “Red Tails” (2012), and most recently “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” (2015). Of course we’ve seen Common showing off his acting chops in movies like “Selma” (2014), “Now You See Me” (2013), and “Just Wright” (2010). Elijah Kelley has previously worked with his The Wiz Live! cast mates Ne-Yo in “Red Tails” and Queen Latifah, who’s playing The Wiz, in “Hairspray” (2007). To be honest, I was hoping for Chris Brown to be cast as the Scarecrow, I mean come on, how perfect would his linky self be, popping and locking belting out those vocals. It’s like Christian Grey all over again. I just hope Kelley shows out.
Other cast members of The Wiz Live! include: David Alan Grier as The Cowardly Lion, Uzo Aduba as Glinda the Good Witch, Amber Riley as Glinda’s sister, Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North, Mary J. Blige as Wicked Witch of the West, Stephanie Mills as Auntie Em, and introducing Shanice Williams as Dorothy.
