Sanaa Lathan has been cast as the leading lady for Omar Tyree’s Flyy Girl novel turned film under the production of Lionsgate.

Lathan will play the female lead character Tracy Ellison, “a successful businesswoman and workaholic who believes that money is always the key to happiness.” Lathan told Variety, “So many people have grown up on this series and I’m looking forward to bringing Tracy Ellison’s story to life through film. It’s my hope to continue to help bring diverse stories to the big screen.”

“The Perfect Guy” actress will also serve as an executive producer for the film and “Precious” screenplay writer Geoffrey Fletcher will be penning the script. Jeff Clanagan, Codeblack Films President, said, “Lathan’s star power paired with Fletcher’s nuanced script work — we’re confident that ‘Flyy Girl’ will prove to be a classic.” I agree!

I can’t even begin to explain how I feel about this. Flyy Girl was one of my favorite books as a pre-teen and although it had mature subject matter for a girl at that age, it was still a very interesting read to me. It inspired me to pen my own short story similar to the idea of a coming of age story I called “Compositions” and I always envisioned this book as a movie in my head, so I’m ecstatic that it’s coming to the big screen. Count on GGB to keep you updated as production for this film unfolds.
