Interview magazine is putting their pulse on the “New Wave” of Hollywood by naming the actresses and actors they feel will be the “household names, subjects of our celluloid fantasies, our watercooler discussions, Twitter debates, and celebrity fetishes” we just can’t get enough of. And to be honest, I see some good ones here that have Interview on the right track; i.e our girl and boy Kiersey Clemons and Avan Jogia.
The “Dope” actress, which is in theaters June 19 [see trailer below], got a start in the business modeling moving on from that since she found it “so boring.” Being a musician and a singer, playing Diggy, a punk band member alongside her two best friends in “Dope” was not a far stretch from who she is. Meeting Pharrell Williams, executive producer for “Dope,” and working with him on the soundtrack however gave the 21-year-old Redondo Beach, California native nerves. “I was so nervous when he walked in. And then I was like, ‘Oh, you’re a normal person.’ He was very humble and really hands-on.”
Outside of “Dope,” you can catch Clemons on Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi series Extant starring Halle Berry this fall and appearing on Fox’s New Girl, with a recurring role.
23-year-old Vancouver native Avan Jogia stars as the infamous young pharaoh King Tutankhamun on the Spike mini-series event Tut this summer and talks what made him want to be an actor in his feature. “When you’re a kid, you’re told you can be anything you want, and that’s not true—you can be one thing,” he told Interview, adding, “I was always dissatisfied by that, but I thought that if I became an actor, I’d get to be a dozen things.”
Mostly known for playing the handsome teen Beck Oliver on Nickelodeon’s Victorious and Danny Desai on the short-lived teen drama Twisted on ABC Family, Jogia has quite the year ahead of him with indie films like “Ten Thousand Saints” with Ethan Hawke and Hailee Steinfeld and “I Am Michael” with James Franco, Emma Roberts, and Zachary Quinto. But don’t think he’s only good in front of the camera, Jogia recently wrote and directed a short film called “Dogs and Men” in what he describes as, “It’s basically about the desperation of people and what they’re willing to do, or not do, to lift themselves out of it,” he says. “I’m not in it. Because there are a lot of pieces in it, I want to make sure I’m not wearing too many hats.”
Joe Cole, Melissa Benoist, Freddie Fox, Quincy Brown, Bel Powley, Aurora Perrineau, Ben Rosenfield, Billie Lourd, Adria Arjona, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ana De Armas, Karl Glusman, Daniel Kaluuya, and Billy Howle all round out Interview’s “New Wave” feature.
