Avan Jogia is no stranger to Hollywood, but with more mature roles being adding to his resume, the 23-year-old is being compared to the likes of Johnny Depp and on the fast track to getting the recognition he deserves.
The TUT actor, who will be playing the infamous Egyptian Pharaoh in Spike’s scripted series this summer, has landed a spot on OUT magazine’s “Hot List” along with others such as: the cast of the movie “Dope,” Darren Criss, and Shamir.
In Jogia’s accompanying article he discusses working with James Franco in “I Am Michael,” spirituality, his organization Straight but Not Narrow, and more.
“Either I’m an excellent cuddler, or he was exhausted,” Jogia tells OUT with a laugh when he talks about the scene he has with Franco in “I Am Michael” where their characters cuddle in bed. “Maybe it was both!,” he adds. Later, the Canada native talks about the ways he’s similar to his character Nico from “I Am Michael.”
“I’m a spiritual person. Like my character, I’ve spent months as a Buddhist, and I have roots in Hinduism. I’ve looked at all kinds of ways of being, because I’m curious about what it takes to be human.” Art became reality for Avan once more from another movie role, actually his first.
Back in 2006, Jogia played Danny Araujo in the TV movie “A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story,” about a slain transgender teen. From that experience, Jogia started Straight but Not Narrow, an organization that “encourages straight teens to get involved in supporting gay rights.” “I saw a gap. There was no one making straight youth responsible for their apathy. When you see a bully beating up a kid and you stand idle, that’s as loud, or louder, than the actual oppression,” he said.
