Raven-Symoné had a recent sit down with, one of my favs, Alicia Quarles from E! News and discussed the power of social media, her memes, “coming out,” and more, but the comments that got everyone buzzing were about her ancestry.
Back track to 2014 when Raven-Symoné sat down with Oprah Winfrey on the Oprah: Where Are They Now? series and said she didn’t wanted to be labeled, and that means labeled as gay or straight, African-American or whatever else race. She went as far to even say she wasn’t African-American.
This would make for the perfect opportunity for the Empire actress to clear up her remarks from that interview but it just got worst. So what were the comments that caused Raven-Symoné to trend on social media? The 29-year-old actress said, “I never said I wasn’t black. I said I wasn’t African-American, and to me, that’s a difference. Thank you to Ancestry.com, actually for sending me my DNA test!… I am from every continent in Africa, except for one, and I’m from every continent in Europe, except for one! We went back super-far, and for the last 400 years, my family’s been living in Virginia.”
Now come on guys. We’ve all said things with the right intention but just said them wrong. Raven-Symoné seems like a pretty intelligent girl who I’m sure she knows the difference between a country and continent, but nevertheless it made for quite the social media trending topic.
In another segment, Raven-Symoné talked about the power of social media, memes about herself and more! [WATCH BOTH CLIPS BELOW]
