David Duchovny (Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Scully) are set to reprise the roles that sealed their fame in pop culture as the FBI agents solving crimes with a supernatural or unexplained nature.

On Twitter, the official page for FOX tweeted, “It’s true: is returning!,” with a link to more information about the special announcement.[SEE BELOWDana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group, along with Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of The X-Files, released statements about the limited series event that will produce six new episodes.

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” Carter said, adding, “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

Walden and Newman also had something to say about working on the show. “We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,” they said.

The two concluded, “The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. The X-Files premiered in September 1993 and ran for nine seasons. The show earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, as it became one of the most successful television programs of all time. I sure know I was and still am a fan.
