Big Sean covers the February/March 2015 issue of Complex magazine and talks about his hometown Detroit, the infamous “Control” verse, why things went sour with his ex-fiancé Naya Rivera, his new relationship with Ariana Grande, and more.
“We had to deliver a morning poem every day and a goodbye poem at the end of the day,” Sean said about attending one of the best schools in the Detroit area. “It taught me to be open-minded and creative.”
Being around different groups of people also helped Sean adapt to the many sides of the music industry. He told Complex, “It was good to see both aspects. I take pride in being able to hop on a song with Eminem and Kanye, or Jay Z, and then being able to hop on a Fall Out Boy song.”
Big Sean later talked about his single “Control” where Kendrick Lamar famously called out pretty much every rapper in the hip hop community. “Looking back on it, it was a different vibe than my album,” Sean said. “There’s a lot of negativity on that song, and I don’t fuck with negative shit. People love drama, people love bullshit. I knew when Kendrick did that name-dropping that it was just gonna set it off, and I could see why people gravitated towards that verse for that reason. I respected him for thinking of that. I never wanna shade anybody. I would’ve been a ho-ass nigga if I cut that out of his verse, or if I didn’t put the song out.”
Another topic of discussion during this interview was Sean’s ex, Glee actress Naya Rivera and current girlfriend, “Bang Bang” singer Ariana Grande. Rivera and Sean began dating in 2013 and were engaged later that year in October. April 2014 the couple split and rumors that infidelity and jealousy issues played a role. The two had a public break up, and by public I mean things got nasty on social media where Rivera accused Sean of stealing a Rolex watch from her.
“First of all, why would I have to steal a Rolex?” says Sean about the Rolex theft rumors. “Second of all, every Rolex that I have, I have receipts for, papers for, certificates of authenticity for. I would never steal a Rolex from anybody. You see that tweet got deleted in like 20 seconds.”
Sean then candidly talked about the lady he’s “gotta thank God for,” Ariana Grande. “We started as friends,” he said. “I’d never done that. Usually you meet a girl and then start dating. We always saw each other in the studio, and we’d talk about songs we were working on. It was cool to have a girl that I could talk to about my problems. I did that with her. It’s not some fake-ass, inauthentic shit when I say we were friends. This is something special and I appreciate every moment of it.”
Grande and Sean met back in 2011 at Jingle Ball and since then the two have worked together many times before sparking their love affair. Sean appears on many of Grande’s records, i.e. “Problem,” “Right There,” and “Best Mistake.”
The new year is bringing new music for the “IDFWU” rapper. Dark Sky Paradise is the name of Big Sean’s third studio album, slated to be available February 24. On Instagram, Big Sean teased the album by uploading two videos with a variety of shots and music, I’m assuming is from the album. He captioned the first video, “uknowbigsean.com // album announcement” and the second “#DarkSkyParadise // more info on uknowbigsean.com.” [SEE BELOW] Drake and Ariana Grande both posted a “Dark Sky Paradise” image on their Instagram page, does this mean they are collaborating on Sean’s album? We’ll have to wait and see.
