Today the sports world is mourning the loss of an iconic sports news anchor. Stuart Scott succumbed to his battle with cancer and has died at the age of 49.

Sports Center broke the news about the ESPN anchor on their Twitter page by tweeting, “We are heartbroken to report that Stuart Scott has died after a long fight with cancer. He was 49.” [SEE BELOW]

In more series of tweets, Sports Center wrote “Sadly, Stuart Scott is gone. He worked at ESPN since 1993 and carved out a unique style. We will never forget him” and “Stuart Scott was truly as cool as the other side of the pillow. He changed sportscasting forever.”

The Sports Center anchor discovered his illness in 2007 after an appendectomy revealed a malignancy. He had preventative chemotherapy but was later diagnosed with full-blown cancer in 2011. Remission followed the year after but he relapsed in 2013.

Last summer Stuart Scott was honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the ESPYs and delivered a memorable, emotional speech about battling cancer and his loved ones.

Stuart Scott leaves behind two teenage daughters, Taelor and Sydni Scott, his parents, two sisters, a brother, his girlfriend Kristin, and his ex-wife Kimberly.

RIP Stuart Scott. My condolences and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.
