A bitter, cold night in Philadelphia didn’t stop hundreds from dressing to the nines and heading to the Kimmel Center to celebrate rock legend and philanthropist Jon Bon Jovi, recipient of the 2014 Marian Anderson Award.
Wanda Sykes served as host of the night and provided the laughs during the event. Senator Cory Booker, Mayor Michael Nutter, and Sister Mary Scullion of Project Home all shared sentiments on Jon Bon Jovi earning this prestigious award.
Special music performances included: Sean Bennett, Jon Bastite and Stay Human, Tyler Ritter and Nick Wheeler of All American Rejects, and Estelle featuring Bill Jolly.
Upon taking the stage to a standing ovation, Jon Bon Jovi said, “I’m deeply humbled to accept this award and I do so fully aware of the rich and the powerful legacy of this honor.” He continued to speak about how he got his start in music, the man who inspired him, and challenged the audience to seek inspiration from those from the past.
Outside of Jon Bon Jovi taking the stage and accepting his award, I would say the highlight of the night was Estelle performing a rendition of “Living on A Prayer.” It was so amazing!
The Marion Anderson Award ceremony is an iconic Philadelphia tradition that dates back to 1990 but the award was first established in 1943 when singer Marian Anderson herself earned the $10,000 Bok Prize in Philly. After losing funding, the awards were later rebooted and has now turned into a major event in the city of Brotherly love honoring some great talent.
Past recipients of the Marion Anderson Award include: Mia Farrow, Elizabeth Taylor, Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Maya Angelou, Sidney Poitier, Richard Gere, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.
