This is a sad day in Hollywood; famed comic, author, TV personality and E! Fashion Police host Joan Rivers has passed away 81.

Rivers’ daughter Melissa Rivers released a statement announcing the news about her mother. She said, “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.”

Rivers’ continued, “Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”

Late last month, Joan Rivers was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York after going into cardiac arrest following a procedure at a doctor’s office. She was later put in a coma then placed on life support; and today she sadly succumbed to complications that placed her in the hospital in the first place.

Rivers’ career spanned nearly 50 years ranging in television, red carpet commentary and stand up comic specials. I remember seeing Joan Rivers once in person. This was back when I worked at Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York City and the pint size comedienne walked in, like many celebrities did, unaccompanied by any security. She went on a candy shopping spree with her grandson Cooper. I remember being so excited to see her in person and in awe at just how glamorous she really was in person, and probably on her day off. She smiled at customers who recognized her and seemed so sweet with her grandson. I didn’t know Joan Rivers personally but I do know I laughed at her work even when it was about my baby Kristen Stewart. I know she was loved and respected in her industry and I know she will be missed.

RIP Joan Rivers! My prayers are with your loved ones during this time.
