Hello and welcome to the 2nd edition of Philly’s Phinest; an interview series showcasing young entrepreneurs in my hometown of Philadelphia, PA.
Over the past two weeks I brought you exclusives interviews from Curran J of Kings Rule Together and Tyrone Dixon and Dayron Bowers of LITM Marketing Group. We are half way through the Philly’s Phinest series so now it’s time to switch it up and talk to some girl bosses!
Meet Kate Marlys, CEO of Philly PR Girl Public Relations Firm.
“I was a Marketing major in college and, I tell people this all the time, I feel like PR and Marketing are in my blood,” Marlys said discussing her PR journey. She continued, “After college I started working, I worked at a radio station, I had a few jobs here and there and then I fell into the non profit world where I began an executive director and I worked for Marketing and PR for non profits here in the city. And then in 2010 I started Philly PR Girl the blog, and after that is when I started freelancing and then Philly PR Girl blog became in 2012 Philly PR Girl LLC and became a full blown PR company.”
“The hardest part is taking that leap,” Marlys said about becoming an entrepreneur. Since leaving the typical 9-5 lifestyle and embracing her dream job, Kate Marlys created Philly PR Girl into a full service firm offering public relations, social media assistance, event planning and event management, specializing in planning and promoting special events.
Later, Marlys offered advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. “Go for it,” she said, “If you think that you can do this and you think that you have something or a special skill that you can help people and that you know no one else has, I think you should stick with it.” Marlys added, “Listen, there are plenty of entrepreneurs that have part time jobs and freelance different things here and there, and that’s ok too, but I wouldn’t give up on your dream or your brand.”
