Can somebody explain to me why I didn’t know there was going to be a “Flowers in the Attic” remake?! And the funny thing is, last time I watched the movie I was wondering why there hadn’t been a remake already; maybe my remake prayers have been answered.
V.C. Andrews classic book Flowers in the Attic was all the rave back in late 1980’s so much so that a film adaptation of the book was created. The 1987 film, which I saw, stars Louise Fletcher as Grandmother, Victoria Tennant as mother and Kristy Swanson as Cathy, but allow me to give you a little background info on the film if you are at a lost.
“Flowers in the Attic” is the story about the Dollanganger family. Chris, Cathy, Cory, and Carrie are the product on an incestuous relationship between their mother and father but that it unbeknownst to them. After their father’s death, the family is broke and Corinne, the mother, brings her children to her parents house in an attempt to win back her father’s love and get written back in his will hoping to gain her inheritance. What the children don’t know is that they were never meant to leave that house, the attic to be exact, because if it was ever proven that their mother had children from her relationship she would not receive her money. The children are locked away for about two years until they finally make an escape after losing their sibling. Deep, I know.
In the 2014 version Kiernan Shipka (Cathy), Heather Graham (Mother), and Ellen Burstyn (Grandmother) are the leads and EW is giving us the first look at the cast. But this remake is said to be different from the 1987 film. Fans of cult book were disappointed in how the first film strayed away from the book but the Lifetime version promises to “go there” and by that I mean show how the older siblings, Cathy and Chris, begin an incest relationship.
“Flowers in the Attic” will air January 18, 2014 on Lifetime. I can’t wait to see it.
