With Halloween right around the corner the rise of witches and witchcraft in television is having perfect timing.
But let’s not forget the pioneers in the magical game. With new series like Lifetime’s Witches of East End and FX taking on the supernatural with American Horror Story Coven; I can’t help but to think about films like “Harry Potter,” “Hocus Pocus” and “The Craft” and television shows like Charmed, Sabrina The Teenage Witch and Supernatural that have paved the way.
Now I’m a huge fan of AHS so I don’t care if this season was about chicken cutlets I’d be tuned in but the fact that creator and writer Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck, Glee) picked up on this popular genre is no coincidence. Witches of East End is a new series starring Jenna Dewan Tatum, Julia Ormond and Rachel Boston that premiered yesterday that centers around, you guessed it, witches. I tuned in and thought it was OK for a first episode and would give a second episode try.
With the new wave of the supernatural I think it’s time to dust off the old spell books, brooms and beware of black cats because “the witch is back and there’s hell to pay.”
So what do you think? Are witches the new vampires? Do you welcome this trend or are you already over it?
