Margaret Thatcher died Monday morning after suffering a stroke.

Thatcher is a former U.K Prime Minister,  the only women to ever hold such a position. She was in office from 1979 to 1990, and garnered the nicknamed “Iron Lady” due to her firm stance on political issues.

“She had a stroke this morning and died peacefully,” her spokesman, Tim Bell, told Sky News television. “We’ll never see the like of her again. She was one of the great prime ministers of all times. She transformed people’s lives.”

Actress Meryl Streep portrayed Thatcher in The Iron Lady which she won an Academy Award for.

“Margaret Thatcher was a pioneer, willingly or unwillingly, for the role of women in politics,” Streep says. “It is hard to imagine a part of our current history that has not been affected by measures she put forward in the U.K. at the end of the 20th century,” Streep said in a statement.

The current Prime Minister David Cameron spoke on the passing, “Margaret Thatcher didn’t just lead our country – she saved our country.”Margaret Thatcher took a country that was on its knees and made Britain stand tall again.”He added: “We can’t deny that Lady Thatcher divided opinion. For many of us, she was and is an inspiration.

May her soul rest in peace.
