February is the special month in which we honor and celebrate African-Americans, past and present, for all their accomplishments in a variety of fields: music, television, film, fashion, business and so much more. Here at Glambergirlblog we want to do things a little bit different. Everyday throughout this month we will spotlight some of the glamberous African-Americans in the entertainment industry.
The 85th Academy Awards is taking place on Sunday, February 24, so in order to prepare today and throughout the weekend Black History Month Spotlight, BHM, is going Oscar gold and celebrating some of the past and present Oscar worthy ladies. First up, Miss Jennifer Hudson.
The talented singer and actress was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up singing in her church choir. Building up her vocal and performing skills up as a Disney cruise ship singer; Jennifer auditioned for American Idol in 2004. The singer was eliminated from the show to the public’s upset but went on to bigger and better things. A year later Jennifer landed the role of Effie White in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.” Jen sung and acted her heart out so much that she was awarded a Golden Globe award and an Oscar as a supporting actress.
From then on Jennifer’s career was on a high-speed to success! She continued to land film roles (“Sex and the City” and “The Secret Life of Bees”) and released an album. Sadly, a family tragedy caused a road block in her career; Jennifer’s mother, brother and nephew were all brutally murdered. In 2011, Jen came back into the spotlight after she took time off to mourn and sung the national anthem at Super Bowl XLIII and released another album.
These days Jennifer has been very busy. She’s a spokesperson for Weight Watchers and published a book I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down. She has a clothing line and will be featured on the NBC television series Smash. Jennifer also has a son with her fiancé David Otunga.
Fun Fact About Jennifer Hudson: Jennifer won a Grammy for her debut album in 2008.
