New York Fashion Week, NYFW, Spring 2013 is upon us! We are ONE day away from the official kick off, Fashion Night Out, and GGB has an entire NYFW special posts planned. To start things off I want to introduce you to a new section of this blog GGB: Fashion Focus, in which I highlight upcoming designers, stylists and models. So without further adieu: MEET JREE DESIREE!
Jasmine Chandler, the face behind ‘Jree Desiree,’ is a Prince George’s County, Maryland native on the verge of greatness. Starting as a Pharmacy major in college, Jasmine quickly discovered that her passion lied in something more creative and opted for a complete 360.
“That wasn’t in my heart and it made it a difficult freshman year for me. However, I convinced my parents to let me go to school for fashion and they gave me Delaware State University as my ultimatum.” From there Jasmine studied Textiles & Apparel and moved on to work towards a MFA in Fashion Design from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Insert Jree Desiree here, a name rooted from Jasmine’s first and middle name. Almost completely her studies at Drexel, Jasmine decided to take her love of clothes and passion for fashion to the next level. “I feel my skills have finally come to a level where I can start making things for other people. As of right now I am just doing a few small projects for people here in there.”
Designing clothes for a variety of clients can be very difficult at times but Jasmine finds unique ways to draw inspiration to meet clients need. “Clothing stores, fabric stores, and Tumblr,” are a few ways Jasmine gets inspired. “I’ll be out shopping or browsing on Tumblr and see a detail or concept that I would really like. I always get the most inspiration in fabric stores, sometimes I’ll just see a fabric and it will inspire me to make something out of it.”
I bet you want to know what inspires Jasmine’s style? “Funny thing is I have been trying to describe my style for the longest. It’s really a mashup of how I’m feeling, somedays I’ll be preppy, to girly, to more of a street style,” I know that feeling. Getting dress sometimes depends on a mood. So who would Jasmine love to dress? “I love the style of Teyanna Taylor, Angela Simmons, and Solange Knowles so I would love to make something for them.”
Jasmine Chandler from Jree Desiree is an aspiring designer on the right track to becoming a household name. Jasmine offered a fashion tip that gets her through the tough times. “It’s not necessarily a fashion tip but just a quote I have lived by the means a lot to me ‘be true to your dreams.'”
